Description
Konavle is often referred to as the fertile valley of Dubrovnik, where natural and historical heritage are visible in each corner, while the local people keep traditions alive through their customs, handicrafts, folklore, traditional costumes and much more.
This afternoon's history and wine tour will take us through authentic villages of Konavle until we reach the village Dunave – home of the majestic Sokol Fortress. Standing proudly on a 25 meter high rock, this medieval fortress was strategically positioned along the border with the Ottoman Empire of that time. Even though its present name was first mentioned in 1373, archaeological findings indicate its existence of several thousand years prior. In addition to its defensive function, the fortress was also used to store ammunition, weapons, grain and wine in the event of exceptional war circumstances. Nowadays, its museum houses various weaponry, including original canons, blacksmith's repair shop, kitchen area with fireplace and various items found on-site during the excavations. In addition to its display, the museum also offers unique sound effects throughout the fortress which take you back in time and offer a special experience. Due to its high position, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the whole Konavle valley.
After touring the fortress and a short transfer, we arrive in the village of Gruda. Here we will visit a family farm, which produces top quality local wines and liqueurs, which contain indigenous aromatic herbs and give them a special taste of the Mediterranean climate. During the presentation of traditional grape growing, you will have the opportunity to taste homemade liqueurs and three types of wine with a snack.
A short walk brings us to a traditional, Konavle house, which is mentioned here in the 15th century while it got its present appearance in the 19th century. On the ground floor of the house is an ethno collection in which objects from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century are collected. The collection is a cross-section of the family history and tells about the former way of life of the inhabitants of Konavle.
This area is surrounded by woods, offering cooler temperatures during warm summer days. As our day together comes to its end, heavy-heartedly we will have to leave this peaceful place.
