Description
Less than a 30-minute drive from the border with Croatia, our trip to Trebinje will allow you to experience a different culture, where on many occasions you can see the contrast between the old and the modern way of life.
The first location we will visit is the Tvrdoš Monastery, which was built on the foundations of an ancient monastery dating from the fourth century. The monastery is located on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by vineyards cultivated by the monks themselves. After a short tour of the monastery, we will head to the monastery cellar, where you will be able to taste the excellent, indigenous wines produced by the monks.
Then we will head to the lookout point above the town of Trebinje, where the Hercegovačka Gračanica monastery is located. It was built according to the wishes of the Serbian poet Jovan Dučić, expressed in his will. He wanted to be buried on one of the hills surrounding Trebinje in a 'Kosovo-like' monastery- referring to Gračanica in Kosovo, the most important legacy of King Milutin from 1321. The entire complex was completed in 2000, 47 years after the poet’s death. The church was built in the Byzantine style and painted with the so-called ‘secco’ technique (dry painting), strongly influenced by the famous Greek icon painter Stamatis Skliris.
After a short drive we will arrive in the old town of Trebinje, where you will be able to explore the natural and cultural sights that this city abounds in; Osman Pasha's mosque from the eighteenth century, the Catholic Cathedral, the Clock Tower - a clock tower, the Castle - built in the eighteenth century, the Museum of Herzegovina, the Green Market, the square with centuries-old plane trees, the river Trebisnjica and more. We also suggest tasting traditional dishes such as; kaymak, various types of pies, peka and other meat dishes.
The fact that Trebinje has the largest number of monuments (over 50 of them are on a temporary list and 29 of them are on the official list) is the best witness to the abundance of cultural-historical heritage of this area.
As the evening approaches, the trip will take us back to Croatia, while this discovery day in Bosnia and Herzegovina will come to its end.
